In Balatro, jokers are special modifier cards that shape the entire scoring system of a run. They are not part of the standard playing deck but sit in separate slots, providing ongoing or conditional effects that influence every poker hand played. Each joker affects the way chips and multipliers are calculated, which changes how players build their strategies. The game features several rarity tiers, from common to legendary, and each one introduces a different degree of impact and complexity.

Jokers activate automatically during play, applying their effects to every completed hand. Their influence can range from small numeric bonuses to large structural changes in how hands are scored or cards are drawn. The balance of a run depends on how well the player combines these modifiers. General joker functions can be grouped as follows:

  • Adding bonus chips to specific hand types or suits
  • Increasing the multiplier (Mult) based on certain triggers
  • Modifying deck composition or discard limits
  • Granting situational bonuses tied to the number of cards, suits, or hand streaks
    Each joker operates within these categories, but the real depth comes from how their effects interact when used together. Because multiple jokers can be active simultaneously, their order and combination often determine total score efficiency.
